Semester 5 Ends With a Bang!

Semester 5 Open Day from Skateistan on Vimeo.

Check out the end of semester video / slideshow that shows off all the work the kids in Kabul accomplished over the past 12 weeks.  This semester's topic was: CULTURE.  Students were excited to show off all the things that they loved about being Afghan to the international staff.

They had fun, went on field trips, learned about music as a career, had kite races and even got to do henna tattoos on their skateboards.  It was a particularly exciting, yet educational semester for both the volunteers and the students.

Skateistan culminated the semester with a celebration and opening of the new multi-sports floor. Thanks in part to a donation from Big Bang Ballers, who gave 1500 USD towards basketball equipment, Skateistan now has a wooden multi-sports floor where students will be able to play basketball, football (soccer), volleyball, badminton, and other indoor sports. President of the Afghan National Olympic Committee (ANOC), General Zahir Aghbar, led the ribbon cutting ceremony after giving a speech for the hundreds in attendance.

The event was packed with students, parents, local media and other supporters who came out to enjoy the celebration. The ceremonies began with the singing of Afghanistan’s National Anthem, sung by four of Skateistan’s own female students. After a few words from Skateistan founder and director, Oliver Percovich, a well-known Afghan comedian took the stage to help liven up the day. Niki Williams (who just finished a 6 month volunteer position in Kabul) also shared a short video about the 5th semester that students help put together for the event.

COMING SOON.....This Semester's Film class made a short film that they're very excited about.  In the end, they made movie posters and held a wrap party complete with a "red carpet" and paparazzi photos.  Look out for their hilarious comedy called "Murza & The Chicken" coming to a computer screen near you!!
